Answers:
Cattle prices change regularly and are based on several factors: the popularity and price of beef and milk at the time, the age of the cow, the size of the cow, the sex of the animal, the condition of the animal, and who is selling it. Prices are by weight and can range anywhere from $50-$100 per cwt (which is 100 pounds). Then you have to feed it. I would go to this link to check out everything involved in actually owning cattle (this site is particular to beef cattle, but a little research would get you dairy cattle). http://www.vetmed.wsu.edu/courses-jmgay/...
Have fun.
Young calfs run about four hundred dollars from a good line in this area. Some people buy them young and bottle feed them for 4H. You shouldn't get one before 6 weeks or so because it will die if taken from mom too early. Sometimes you can get a young on as low as two hundred and up to six hundred for something like a white parka.
Depends upon the age, the weight and the type of "cow" you all want. Do you want a cow or a bull? Is there a local 4-H Club in your town or near where you live? Does the high school have an FFA Chapter? If you all have any of these types of things available they could assist you or your local County Agent could also help.
The price changes day to day as Jessica mentioned. You might want to find out if there is an auction barn in your area. You can go to the auctions %26 place bids on the cows that you want. It will also give you an idea of how much cattle are selling for in your area. Most of the time they are sold by weight.
You might want to research %26 learn more about cattle before you just go out %26 buy one. There is a lot of things that you will have to learn (ie: what are their nutritional need, how many acres you will need to support their grazing needs, equipment that might need to be purchased, etc.))
