Pet Raccoon names?

Ok my best friend wants to get 2 raccoons. They've been doing a lot of research and I guess they've found out that it's legal here. I still don't think she should get them but her and her family have a lot of pets and I guess she really wants one. I have no hope of talking her out of it so anyways she's looking for names for them. They don't know if the raccoons are male or female.
Please don't tell me they aren't good pets because it's not me getting them. I don't even think they should get them. But please suggest some names.
Answers:
If they are trying to CATCH two raccoons, what they are doing is ILLEGAL! You can not capture a wild animal and keep it as a pet. If raccoons are legal as pets where your friends live, they need to PURCHASE them from a reliable breeder.
Even wildlife rehabilitators who only keep wild animals until they are healthy enough to be released need state and federal permits to keep the animals. Same goes for bird banders, who only have the birds in their possession for a matter of minutes!
Tell your friends they had better do a lot more research!
Rac %26 Coon
scraps, pepper, oscar the grouch, coon, i dont knoe you really have to look into the face of a pet and find what fits its face and nature and characteristics...
Rocco, Roscoe, Roman for a male
Rosie some other R names for them, it seems to fit them.
The Beatles had a song called "Rocky Raccoon"...maybe the other could be named "Adrian" or "Bullwinkle".
Smokey %26 Bandit
How about Eric, Zippy, Elik, Kat, Billy, K.C., Valerie, Daisy, Chippy, Mytchet, or Mayia? That would probably be good.

Also, do your friend know what to feed the racoon/how much space it would take up/etc.? And also, its probably not a good idea to catch an adult racoon, for they will be untrainable. Its better to try and catch the youngest one you can if your going to catch them at all.
miko! or bonnie and clyde!

Pet Raccoon names?

My best friend is going to get two raccoons, one for her and one for her sister. They've been looking for names for them. They don't yet know the gender but any suggestions?
Answers:
Raccoons do NOT make good pets. They are 'cute' as babies but they are not domesticated (selectively bred over many generations for traits that allow them to live with humans.) They will instinctively want to breed. The vast majority will get mean even if neutered and most will get grossly obese even if not neutered.
In my experience as a wildlife and exotic veterinarian, most of these animals end up in small cages outside after the first couple of years and have poor quality of life. Always gotten with the best intentions but a horrible end!
Oh and did I mention that they smell (read 'reek') when they reach adulthood--worse if not neutered. Very attractive to racoons of the opposite sex but not to human noses. (Think TomCat urine spray smell...)
And one last small 'fun' fact is if they EVER bite/nip ANYONE--even their owners, they will have to be euthanized and have their brains submitted for rabies testing. There is not an approved quarantine period (or approved vaccines) for pet raccoon. ALL raccoons that bite people (wild or pet) must be tested.
baylis and lepto cuz they can give you baylisascariasis and leptospirosis.
I have never heard of raccoons being legal as pets anywhere. They are wild animals. Are you sure this legal? I'd sure check it out. They don't tame well.
Pete and Repete.
Gizmo %26 Gadget
Rocky %26 Roscoe
Jack %26 Jill
Kee Kee %26 Lee Lee
Bandit %26 Smoky
jasper and bandit
bandit =]
Cooter and Boss Hog
Call them Rabies and Tetanus, cause you can catch it from them.
Even "bottle babies" turn on their mommies within a year. Adult raccoons are so ferocious not even a full grown coyote will hunt one.
They are MEAN!!
You can't train them to be pets.
It's illegal to keep wild animals as a pet.
Raccoons that are raised by humans never learn to fear them. They can't be turned back into the wild, and zoos won't take them. They will wind up killed.
I'VE SEEN IT HAPPEN!
Volunteer with a wildlife rehabilitation center. You will learn so much about caged wildlife.
Do not get raccoons as pets. They are dangerous, illegal as pets in most places, and too much trouble.

rocco or roxie
I too just got a raccoon and tryin to figure out a name for him. Don't listen to some of these peoples. They probably never had a raccoon as a pet and don't know what their talking about. They can make good pets. It's all in how you raise them. I had one before but he ran away. He was so nice. slept in my bed with me, played with children. He never bit anyone. I think the reason why he never came back was because he found a female friend. And raccoons are legal to have as pets in some states. Just check with your local wild life center. And you'll need to get a license for him. And make sure you keep up with his shots. Raccoons don't get rabies from the air they have to be biten by an animal that carries the virus. On tryin to figure out a name. I'am lost as well. I hope you find a name and enjoy your little one.

Pet question???

i was gonna get a hermit crab. how much do they cost, and how much will it cost for everything else? thanks so much!! and links would be great!!!!! thanks everyone !!!!!
Answers:
ok we have one hermit crab but are upgrading this weekend and adding another but i have priced everything ahead of time...
You can buy a average size cage with supplies or without at a petstore for about 25 dollars. The crab costs about 6 dollars. While at the beach we bought our first cage for 15.99 and the crab was free but here in Kentucky things are a bit pricer. What we are upgrading to is the following
5 gallon glass aquarium tank $10
screen for tank 5.00
Cholla wood for climbing 4.00
gravel for crab (easier to clean than sand) 4.00
large pond 5.00
3 sponges 2-3 dollars each
feeding shells 2.00
and any other accessories you want to add

At www.petco.com there is a crab habitat that is about 18 dollars i am sending you the link to it.
You can see that it all depends on how much you want to invest in your pet and what you want to spend! hope all this helps... but just to let you know crabs do better if they have more than one to a cage they like to have buddies!
well I dont really have any links. I bought my hermit crabs at one of those 'junk shops' when I went to myrtle beach. They have them all on the eastern/southern coasts. Basically any pet stores have them. They are cheap %26 you can pick out cute shells. But beware: they do pinch and it'll hurt and they can sometimes be mean.
hermit crabs are probly one of the most least expensive pets. probly the same as a fish. they are easy to care for too. when i was little i had a couple and i made obsticale courses for it and my sis on a leash on his shell and took him for a walk! lol. they are fun litter critters. good luck. :-)
There is a lot of new research regarding pet hermit crabs-starting off with they need a much larger tank than most people have mentioned.
Check out http://www.hermit-crabs.com/ and http://www.hermitcrabassociation.com/php...
Minimum 10 gallon tank $10
lid $15
light $25
bulbs $15
playsand $5
dechlorinator $4
hidies $7
2 water bowls $6
marine salt (oceanic) $10
thermometer $7
hygrometer $7
things to climb $15
food bowl $3
fresh foods kibbles $10
2 crabs $10
approx $149

Pet Problem?

I have a dog and can only get one more pet. I want a budgie...but I'd like to hear what other people say. So please give your opinion.
Answers:
ooo those are suposed to be great!
I think its fine,I love animals
You should be ashamed for keeping any animal in captivity.
I would get another dog. If you get a bird you have to clean the cage every day which you probably won't want to do as it gets old fast.
My husbands parents have budgies, and they are annoying. They tweet so loud. They are only quiet at night when they have a cover over the bird cage. There's always feathers and sawdust everywhere.
I would not get a budgie. I would get a lizard.

Pet people, is this too spiteful, or do i get my jollies?

I keep gerbils in dorms and was reported by a security guard. He told me that he knew I had an animal in my room 3 weeks ago, but only just reported me. Shall I tell on him?
They told me if i don't remove my pets within 24 hours they will be exterminated.
Answers:
Unless there are specific rules against having pets and/or rodents in your dorm, than yes you should definetley report him.
I think you should give your gerbil away to save his life and not get exterminated.
Spend your time finding a home for your pets not getting revenge. It won't change anything if you tell on him. He will probably get a slap on the hand anyway.
report him but would that really fix the problem? its a sad situation to be in. to loose your pets. that security guard really sucks.
good luck :)
I couldn't concentrate on your question for looking at that scary Avator of yours.
It sounds as if Security was trying to let you keep your pets.
Someone probably brought the fact that you were breaking the rules by having gerbils in your room and they had to say something to you at that point.
They were just doing their job. Find out who brought it to their attention.
tell on him!!! Pets are like peoples kids! why would anyone kill a kid! Thats just terrible. I say call the SPCA on him or the police station!! Give him to a parent,a friend,or sibling to keep for a while until the case is closed.
most dorms do not allow pets... they make that fact clear. I can't tell you how many young people get them anyway and then the animals end up dead, dumped, or homeless when the school finds out. The person who reported you was not the one breaking the rules and putting those little critter's lives in danger. You are. You still have a chance to be responsible... get them a new home... once you have your own place, you can have all the pets you want. Patience is part of growing up... you have to be mature enough to wait on a pet if your current residence doesn't allow them. "but I want it now" is for small children and veruca salt.
"Shall I tell on him" what has he done. looks like you will have to find a new home for your gerbils
find them a new home then report him

Pet Parade Ideas....?

I have a chihuahua that I want to put into a pet parade, i need some ideas on what i out dress her as... Thanks :)
Answers:
That's really cool! I want to do that now. LOL
Anyway you can just go to Google or Yahoo and search dog costumes and you will get so many links! Or you can go to http://www.thehautehound.com I hope it works out for you! That's a really neat thing. I think a Chihuahua would be a good fairy or bumble bee! Hope that helps! :-)
ballerina or a princess w/tiara or a fairy
some sort of mexican outfit, bandelero or mexican bar maid, a hot pepper would be neat.

Pet owners with questions about sick dogs or cats?

I wonder why is it that a lot people would rather ask whats wrong with their pet online, then call their vet as soon as they realize something is wrong. Why is it that no one seems to utilize their vets? As soon as i sence something is wrong with my two dogs, the first thing i do is call my vet and explain to them whats going on? Why would i care and more then that wait for random people who are not vets to answer my questions? Is it jsut me who is wondering that? I mean if you were having a heart attack would you wait and post a question online and see who answers or would you call 911?
Answers:
A lot of people have wondered this, including myself. I'm not sure why some post questions that should be answered by a vet - I guess they are seeking validation that calling the vet is the right thing to do.
I always hope that maybe they have called the vet and are waiting for an answer or return call.
THis morning, I noticed that my dog was bleeding - I took her to the emergency vet immediately. Didn't even think of asking why online. But, I've had pets before so maybe it is just experience or possibly common sense.
Anyway,my dog is fine - urinary tract infection - and I was able to get meds for her.
call 911 911 911 911 911 911 911 911 911 911 911 911 911 911 911 911 911 911
I have wondered the same thing myself. When any of my animals shows signs of illness, I immediately call my vet!
The people that come on here and ask a medical question in regards to their dog not acting right and what should they do are either first time pet owners and really have no idea what they should do or they are the people that try not to take their dog or cat to the vet unless it is absolutely necessary as they do not want to shell out the money.
I sooooooooooooo agree with you on this one. i cant tell you how many times i brought my dogs in for stupid stuff. i once thought my dog had a growth going on on her back, turne out to be a scratch with a scab. another time her eye ball looked ripped, turned out to be a piece of hair on her eye. so as embarassed as i was for going for these things, i also had piece of mind that it was nothing important. always better safe than sorry!
Perhaps, like me, these people seek additional opinions - not all vets are geniuses and some of them are downright dumb.

Pet mouse problem!?

I have 2 mice who have been together for about 6 months and are great. A while ago I bought another pair since that pair was so sweet and when I put them together the male in the new pair killed his mate, and was harassing the old couple.
I removed him and now he's in a cage by himself. The problem is that he's such a disgusting little guy! He doesnt let me touch him, when I pick him up he jumps out of my hand. And he's so dirty! He makes more of a mess than the two others. If I wanted to keep his cage clean I'd have to clean it EVERY day and he wont even let me pick him up to clean it. He covers everything in sticky smelly pee. Its so hard to take care of him that I've come to the point of wondering if I should let him go? He's like a wild animal anyways. I feel bad setting him free, will be find stuff to eat drink and survive, or is he too adjusted to cage life? I know nobody else would want him. Would it be ok taking him to the woods?
Answers:
I'm afraid not--a domesticated mouse would have next to no chance by itself in the wild. I guarantee, he'd die of exposure to the weather, starvation, or predation.
As an alternative, you could take him to a pet shelter--although, with his bad nature, he'd be unlikely to be adopted :(.
Call the pet shop and take him back.

Pet Millipede?

I thought about getting one of a giant millipedes, but my questions is what do you do with them? Do you walk them? Can they play fetch? I'm not aware they can do anything besides run around.
Answers:
they run yes but they dont go for walks or play fetch its preetty boring you just say how cool it is and you end up having a walkin pet fish. Get it?
also be careful handling them, always wash after. Millipedes produce cyanide naturally.

Pet Loss; and its overwhelming sadness?

I lost my dog, Toby, on August 10th to an unknown illness. It was horrible; i didnt even get to say goodbye. When i woke on the morning of August 11th; my parents told me he didnt make it. It felt like someone punched me in the stomach. it hit me hard. and i just cried and cried.
Now i feel so guilty; because i ask my parents to let take him to the vet; they said we couldn't afford it. but i didnt care; i just kept asking; but now; i wish i asked more; because maybe; he'd still be here. And now i get so angry when they talk about him; because im pissed how they didnt take him to the vet; but thats just grief-anger; i guess.
Is there anyway to ease this pain? i hear a sad song; and i burst into tears; i cant even look at his picture without getting a bad feeling in my stomach; but oddly; its like i want to cry; i put on sad songs and cry. i know its good to cry; but i feel like i want to crawl in my bed and just cry forever. i miss him so bad.
Answers:
I know it horrible when you loose a pet. I lost my rabbit, Caramel, I know some of you moght think - It's just a rabbit, but I loved him so much.
One day in the morning, I noticed his eyes were very dull, and I started to panic. We took him to the vet and they didn't know what had happened to him. I had saved up some money and had about $80 and with that I paid for his antibiotics and my mother and grandparents paid for the rest. That was the last time I held him... Oh lord I'm tearing up... In the morning they woke me up to tell me the didn't make it. I was so angry, everyone, everyone kept telling me 'Don't worry he'll be fine' and that was the only hope I had and then it was all shattered, just like that.
I remember, the day he died, I was watching tv alone in my room, and all the chanels I went through was related to pet loss somehow. It made me want to cry more.
I understand the pain your going through. If you feel like crawling in bed and crying, do it, that's really sometimes the only thing you can do. Remember, that you made him happy, and gave him everything you had. He had a good home and had a happy life. I cried and cried until I felt there were just no more tears and my head hurt after so much crying. I didn't want to eat, and lost weight. I made a memorial to him, I gathered all his pictures and put them in a scrap book, that I still keep beside my bed.
I'm sorry for your loss, but you have to be strong.
I know how you feel. I had a dog called Rebel aand we lost him on the day before christmas last year. Had him since i was a baby. First off im sorry about your loss. Its hard when you loose a pet, As it is a member of the family. But with time it does get better. You need to think about the good times and the silly thingd your pet use to do.
I got angry at my parents too. Its grief. It makes you feel better when you blame someone else.
Have you considered getting another dog? If you dont want one. Then i assure you with time, youll feel soooo much better.
Oh, honey, I'm so sad for your loss. Losing a pet is like losing one of your children (to some people) or one of your best friends. You are going through the stages of denial which is okay - there is (1) Denial [this can't be happening]; (2) Anger [why me? It's not fair!]; (3) Bargaining - [I'll be happy just to see him one more time]; (4) Depression [Why bother doing anything?]; and (5) Acceptance [It's going to be okay].
It's okay to let your grief out. You sound pretty young (in high school, maybe?). There is no way to ease the pain. It has to be dealt with step by step. Realize that if Toby were still alive, would he want you to be like this? He's up over the Rainbow Bridge, happy and excited, waiting for you. He's not hurting, and is running around and playing with other dogs. At least I would like to think so.
When you are able to, why not write a little memory book of Toby? Write down some of the things he did to make you laugh, what did he do when caught in the act of being naughty, how he loved you. Add pictures of him throughout the years. Try to remember the good and happy times.
Everyone goes through grief at different stages and times. Sometimes they'll stay in one grief period for a long time, and then move through the others at a fast pace. Only time will be able to help overcome the hurt. But his memory will always be with you.
First of all, I am so sorry about Toby ! There is nothing worse than finding that an animal you love has gone to the Rainbow Bridge without any warning. What your parents did was WRONG, sweetie. They should have at least allowed you to say goodbye to your dog. It sounds as though they discovered he had passed on and then buried him before you ever woke up, in a misguided attempt to try to spare you pain. Your parents may have meant well, but in the end they only made things worse. As difficult as it is for you to do this, you need to found out where they buried Toby, and go and say goodbye to him there. Take along some flowers, or his favorite toy if he had one, and go to whereever he is. Let yourself cry and grieve- that is a normal response to a sudden loss like this.
Meanwhile, I want you to know about something that may bring you some comfort. There is a wonderful poem that was published many years ago by an unknown author called "The Rainbow Bridge". which is available online at rainbowbridge.org. This poem describes what happens to animals who are loved when they die. It begins with the line "Just this side of Heaven is a place called the Rainbow Bridge.." and the poem continues and says that when an animal dies that was loved on Earth, they go to the Bridge. Here, the health and strength they knew when they were young is restored to them, and they can run free and do all the things they enjoyed as pups and kittens, ( and with larger animals, such as horses, colts and fillies) with no suffering or pain. There is a slight catch, though- because they don't live as long as we do, the animals must remain at the Bridge. Then, one day, all of a sudden, they realize that their owners have appeared at the Bridge too- and they run joyfully to find and join them. Then the 2 of them cross the Bridge together.
This beautiful poem has brought me an enormous amount of comfort and solace when my own pets have died, not to mention all the times in my long career in the horse business when I have had to watch or be present when a horse was put down. When I start to miss the animal, I just think of him or her at the Bridge, and that gives me comfort and peace.
For yourself, you need to keep a few things in mind- mainly, that what happened to Toby WAS NOT YOUR FAULT. It's normal to be mad at your parents when they talk about him- and they are being more than a little insensitive to you by talking about him as if he had never existed at all. Anger is part of the grief process- when a person we love dies, it's common for those left behind to be mad at the one who died. No one wants to be left alone like that, and death is the ultimate abandonment. You need to put this idea that you were somehow responsible for Toby's death out of your mind. Actually, it was your PARENTS who didn't want to spend the money to take Toby to the vet, not you. You did all you could, sweetheart. Your feelings of anger and resentment are normal, and I don't blame you for them. You need to take good care of yourself in the coming days, though. Make sure that you get enough sleep ( I know that's a tough one, and you may need to see your doctor for some help with this) and that you eat well. Try to make sure that you get out of the house and exercise for at least half an hour every day as well- exercise will help ease your pain and grief. Grief is hard work, and it takes a long time to heal after a sudden loss like this. Don't be surprised if you have trouble concentrating for a while- that is also normal and part of the grief process. When school starts in a week or two, make sure you tell your teacher(s) and the guidance counselor about Toby, and let them help you work through your feelings. These people are professionals, and they have been trained to help students like you deal with loss and grief- so don't be afraid to ask for help from them. Treat yourself gently and give yourself time to heal up and recover. Eventually, the time will come when you are ready to move on and get another dog, but don't rush or force yourself into that just yet. Good luck to you, and again, I am so sorry for your loss.

Pet insurance?!?

is there such thing as pet insurance? i mean if you take ur pet to the vet and are unable to pay for the procedure what are u supposed to do..just let ur pet suffer..i know that most vets will set up a payment plan but still..pets should be able to have insurance too right?!
i ask because last month within 1month i had to spend over $300 on 2 of my cats that way they wouldnt die
im broke now but it was 100% worth it
i love all my kitties! all 22 of them :)
sshhh dont tell
Answers:
Yes there is pet insurance. I went through VPI (a major insurance co) and I would NOT recommend it. They gave me the run around for 2 months and I after they mailed me their decision, I didn't get one red cent. This also happened to a friend of mine. I was paying $43/month for 2 dogs.
I would recommend this site: http://www.petcareinsurance.com/...
It seems like a good company.
It's worth it, but only if there are major problems. Which of course we don't know right now, but it is good to have, just do your research.
I just googled Pet Insurance and came up with HUNDREDS. Try it yourself.

Pet insurance?

Who is the cheapest company to insure your cat with in the uk ?
Answers:
I don't know if this is the cheapest, but, here is a website to check out:
http://www.petco.com/content/petcareinsu...
I hope that this answers your question! Thanks, and good luck,
~ Future Vet
It is insured under a renters or homeowners policy under liablity..
The cheapest in the UK would be those from the supermarkets, both Tesco and Sainsbury have policies, along with a few others.
But I don't think you're asking the right question, cheap policies could cost you more in the long run, often certain things won't be covered such as long term illness or injury caused by humans.
The best idea is to get a selection of leaflets and read each carefully to decide which is best for you. Personally I use PetPlan, they cover pretty much everything and will pay the vet direct if a problem occurs.
Lastly, your pet is not insured on home insurance as someone has suggested.
If you live in the UK Try Tesco. For other places you will have to check the price comparison sites. for your particular country.
I use Petplan and have done for ten years they always pay out and are always fair i wouldnt recomend anyone else
Unless it is a expensive cat, use Tesco's insurance..
They were great for my cat, cheap and they paid out fast when I had to claim.
I will be insuring my 2 kittens with health-pets.co.uk. they are v.cheap and v.reliable. they also insure for on going conditions (as long as you renew every year). Whichever you go for, ensure that they will pay for ongoing conditions, for example, with cheap insurers... If your cat was to get diabetes, they would cover you for that year, then the next year they would see the diabetes as an "existing medical condition" and therefore not cover you. :-)

Pet food recall?

okay we have a cat and are not sure what to feed her due to
the pet food recall list. this all to me is very confusing - some
say baby food but cats are carnivores and pefer meat. some
websites say friskies and 9 lives are not on the list and then
others say they are. some say organic food - but it is very
pricey. i honestly have no idea what to do - please help - is
9lives and friskeys bad? thats what my cat has ate throughout
the past few weeks. even if it is not - does anyone have any
soultions?
i am so very sorry for those who have lost there animals! i
know what it is like and i am truley sorry.
thanks so much everyone!!!
Answers:
i feed mine friskies, but ONLY the stuff that has no wheat gluten in it. which is any canned food that isn't shredded or chunk style or the prime filets-basically the mush stuff. and the flavor dry i feed him has no wheat gluten, the chefs blend-i think they changed the name to signature blend now or something. i haven't had a problem.
The same thing happened to our cat, so we had to change her diet. We now feed her tuna, which is a bt more pricy, but I know my cat is safe. And do not feed it an entire can at a time. I usually give her 1/3 of the can at a time. Hope this helps and good luck with your furry friend! ;D
Friskies and 9 lives have both not been on the recall list... YET. And the key word here is YET.. much like other brands of dog and cat foods that were not initially on the list but eventually got added among the others.
Not all organic food is pricey.
By Nature at PetSmart is not on the recall and will not be on the recall because it doesn't contain the product they are having issues with which is the corn/wheat gluten products used as fillers in most brands.
If you really do not want to spend the extra $3 on good food for your cat (it's good for more reasons than not being on the recall list) then I would simply recommend purchasing any brand that isn't currently on the MenuFoods recall list (which you can get by searching Google).
FYI - Tuna alone is not a sufficient diet for your cat. Tuna can be given as a reward or treat, but you should not expect your cat to be healthy if it just eats Tuna it's entire life.
I went on the official FDA website for the recalls and decided to feed my cats a mixture of Friskies and Fancy Feast as I did not see them on the list my cats prefer dry and canned cat food. Fancy Feast is a bit more expensive but my cats enjoy it so I will pay the price. As for the first answer it is a good idea of feeding the cat tuna but it does not give them the adequate nutrition that they need... but in the wild they don't have somebody to make sure they eat their meat and veges so it is all in what you believe is best for your cat.
Whatever you do , don't feed your cat IAMS- There was a warning posted on the Craig forum this moring. Of all the foods available, Fancy Feast is the best commercial food: Turkey and Giblet Feast, Liver and Giblet Feast, Whitefish and Tuna Feast ,to name a few, do not contain wheat gluttun. They are also low in carbs- especially the ones I have listed- Chicken feast and Tender Beef Feast are low carb too. Not all of Fancy Feast are the best for kitty but the ones I have listed here are the best. They have discovered that high carb cat foods are contributing to feline diabetes so its important that you try to avoid high carbs. Facy Feast is about 5.20 for 12 cans and while this is not cheap- its not as expensive as the alternatives. Also stay away from dry food. These contain lots of grain that kitty cannot digest because he lacks the essential enzyme for breaking them down. I know all of this because I have a diabetic cat (he is one of five). My cats get the raw diet and canned Fancy Feast.
Good luck!

PET EXPO...I Need ideas...?

I will be renting a booth at a huge Pet Expo. I will be promoting a Holistic Pet Food and I will have one maybe more Adoptable dogs with me. I will be trying to promote my pet food of course and was thinking of a drawing, raffles, helium balloons to be seen above the crowds. There are over 200 other not for profits attending. Expected over 600 people to attend. Ideas for my booth to be attractive and elegant and of course profitable will be appreciated. I will have people helping me with the adoptions and the booth.

Find someone to make homemade biscuits and sell them. This brings in a lot of change but if its just a 3-4 large biscuits in a baggie for a $1 people buy. We actually have several different kinds and let people pick their own. 1 for quarter five for a dollar. The kids buy them one at a time to keep feeding the pets at the function.
Balloons I would be leary of with other animals around - if one pops it could spook I would not take that to an event.
'
For a lot of raffles and drawings you may need a gambling license so check your laws - the license isn't expensive but the laws can be confusing as to what you can and can not do.
Go to small business for a donation. Oreckk vaccum has donated to us air cleaners and vaccums that people know the value and have been more than willing to take a chance to win. Create doggie baskets small little supplies, bowls, shampoo, leash collar all with a certain theme. Sports team thems get a lot of attention.
Be sure to have a fun small activity for kids. Parents will give them money all day to aggravate someone else. Have cheap stuff they can buy to help support the critters.
If this is your first have fun and be prepared to sleep the entire day after. !!

I like the utensil idea. Chiming won't scare as many dogs as a balloon pop.
The problem with the coloring pages is space and crayons for you to keep track of. Dogs eating them rolling on floors it would be great if you had a whole room of table and chairs but a booth is rough for that. You could print some stickers with your logo just on word. Kids do love stickers.
Well u should do raffles and helium balloons that will be a good idea!Thank you!%26lt;33
Instead of balloons, how about going to a Dollar store and getting some cheap cooking utensils to put up around your booth? That would kind of keep with your pet food theme. You could wear an apron and a chef's hat too.
Also, get some free coloring pages off the internet, put your logo and contact info on them, print out some copies and give them away to the kids. They'll color a picture, mom and dad will put it on the refrigerator, and your info will be right there in front of their face every day.
Wow, what great ideas everyone has! Don't pick mine as a best answer, but I just wanted to let you know that your holistic food may :-) have a non-profit fundraising program like the one on the link below... Maybe have some fliers explaining it, or have a poster with fake Monopology money and pictures of dogs and cats all over advertising "win-win-win" with your holistic food's picture at the top.
I kind of second the idea not to do balloons but what about a gigantic stuffed dog?
I would go ask this question in one of the business forums.
I would stay away from balloons..if one pops it could cause chaos..Use crepe paper streamers..Have fliers ready talking up your adoptions program.. you can print your own business cards... make little gift "doggie" bags for people that stop by your booth. with maybe a sample of your food, your business card, and a flier.. Also Put up pictures around your booth of (that is if you think people you have adopted to wont mind) the dogs and their "friends" that you've gotten together..also make sure you have copies of your adoption agreement..and on your flier make sure you stress key points of your adoption program.. Make sure that you and your help are dressed sorta similiar..maybe different colored polo shirts but all black pants. you can also sometimes have shirts made pretty cheap with your logo info on it...I dont know where your located, but find someone local, and maybe offer them advertising for doing shirts on a discount or whatever...Use a nice tablecover, for your booth table, nothing neon, umm ok i'mma stop there..lol Hope your Expo goes great...and most of all have fun!!

Pet emergency kit help please?

What should I put in a emergency kit for my pets. We have birds, dogs, fish, and a rabbit?
Please give me a detailed list for each of our species of pets.
PLEASE NO RUDE ANSWERS.
Answers:
I wasn't too surprised to find that there are companies that market emergency kits for pets. While I don't think you need to buy one of these packages, you can use their contents to guide you in getting supplies for your pets.
In general, just think of the supplies you use in a week or a month and have them on hand packaged in some way that they won't be ruined by water or mud. I'd use Rubbermaid totes and seal them with duct tape. Of course you can't put perishables in them--don't forget that.
Here's the site that sells dog emergency kits:
http://www.quakekare.com/index.asp?pagea...
Their deluxe dog kit costs abou $60 and contains:
2) Dog Food Packets - vacuum sealed for 5 year shelf life!
(6) Water Boxes - 5 year shelf life!
(2) Thermal Blankets - retains 90% of body heat!
(2) Emergency Lightsticks - with lanyards.
(2) Leads - collar %26 leash.
(2) Dog Toys - vinyl chewable toys (assorted).
(2) Bowls - collapsible bowls hold 40 oz.
(20) Water Purification Tablets - 1 tablet purifies 1 liter. (1) Deluxe Pet First Aid Kit - pet emergencies from head to tail! (
12) Sanitation/Poop Bags - maintain sanitary conditions. (1) Rope - 50' of vinyl cord; create runner or tie down. (1) Decal - Emergency Pet Alert Sticker to put on door/window.
(1) Packaged in 3-1/2 Gallon Waterproof Container
The site here:
http://www.survivormall.com/index.asp?pa...
offers a pet first aid kit that would help your furry pets.
For your birds, you'd need food, grit, and water.
For your bunny, you need food, water, chewable things, timothy hay and some toys. A grooming brush would be good, too.
For your fish? They're easier--water (if it's going to be a long emergency) and food.

Pet door for Sliding Patio Door and GREAT DANES!?

i'm looking for one of those pet doors that work with sliding glass doors. (I don't want to install the pet door in the actual patio door.)
Here's the catch:
I can find them for small breeds (S) up to giant breeds (XXL), but on the giant breed doors that i saw, the actual flap is only 8" above the ground! So that makes the top of the flap at about 28" while my biggest dane is nearly 40" tall! i can't see him 'ducking' to get in and out - he's clumsy enough as it is!
I've already checked ebay and tried searching around, only to find what i've mentioned above. I'd also love for it to be insulated, but at this point, i'll take whatever i can get! I'm getting a little frustrated so i thought i'd ask around and find out if any one has seen what i'm looking for... thanks!

try home depot or Lowe's that's where we got ours our just pops in and out. we used to have and Akita with a lage dog door. he would just duck. but if you have a big burglary rate in your neighborhood then its not a good idea because a grown man could crawl though it.

Pet Dishes?

Is it ok to put pet dishes in the dishwasher every once and a while?
Answers:
Absolutely, you should put them on a sanitize wash with hot water. Your pets bowls/dishes should be washed and rinsed every day or almost every day due to the bacteria that is left in the bowl from their mouths plus from the stagnant water supply.
It's a good idea. The hot water will sanitize them and it does not harm your dishes that are also being santized.
The only case it might be a problem is if it is the type of dish with a rubber no-skid bottom that may deterioriate in the dishwasher.
it should be fine if the dishes are metal, ceramic, or thick plastic, if they are thin or medium plastic they will melt, but it won't make your pets sick or anything.
as long as they are dishwasher safe--absolutely. they need to be washed daily just like you wouldn't use the same dish time after time without washing it
I do. I have a cat, dog, and two baby guinea pigs and I put their bowls in the dishwasher. Hey, if the doctor told me it was okay to put my daughters baby bottles in the dishwasher when she was a baby then I would think it the dishwasher should be a sanitary and healthy was to keep the animal's bowls clean.
yes, unless it's marked on the bottom of the dish to not be put into a dishwasher.
Enjoy your pets.
=^^=
yeah but make sure you don't wash human dishes with the pet dishes
that's what i do

Pet allergies?

I just got a bichon and I read on the internet that they have hair not fur so people won't be allergic to them. But ever since we brought her home my allergies have been bad. Has anyone else have had problems with their bichons?
Answers:
This following is available in the INTERNET:
The Bichon Frise is often recommended as a breed for families with allergies. It is important to discuss this with your allergist before making a decision to buy any pet. Experience shows that those with mild allergies MAY be able to share a home with a Bichon. The person with severe allergies may be at risk for a severe attack when exposed to these dogs. Others will fall between those parameters. It is important that you find out before making a purchase that your allergies will not be affected or how severely.
The best way to find out how you will react is to spend time in the presence of a Bichon. This should be done in a place where no other animals are present to avoid exposure to other allergens. The minimum amount of time would be 1-2 hours and repeated exposure is recommended. How can you arrange this? Find a friend with a Bichon or contact a breeder who will allow your family to visit for an extended time. Have each allergic person hold the animal and be in the room throughout the exposure time. Any allergic adults should be a part of this exposure even if you are buying the puppy as a child鈥檚 pet.
If you do decide to buy the Bichon, realize that adult coats are different from puppy coats so allergic individual should be exposed to both. Also make sure that the puppy can be returned if this does not work out. Responsible breeders ask you to sign a contract that offers certain guarantees and you can expect to include your own agreed upon conditions before signing.
Another consideration before buying is that pets will spend some time outdoors and may bring outside allergens in on the feet and coat. He and you will be better off if he spends most of his time inside. You would be advised to find an area where he can relieve himself on concrete and then you should be a responsible dog owner by cleaning up after him. Realize that he may also bring in dander from other animals every time he goes to the groomer or to the vet鈥檚 office so his coat care may be up to you. Grooming products may contain perfumes.
Now that you have looked at the allergy factor, be sure to read BEFORE YOU BUY YOUR PUPPY to find out about other considerations before you make up your mind that the Bichon (or any pet) is a part of your future.
Not all people react the same way, even to "hypo-allergenic dogs" (bichon, wheaten terrier, Portuguese water dog...), which is why it is a good idea to spend time with the breed before you bring it into the house (I grew up showing %26 breeding wheatens, and we would always do this with potential buyers, especially if they had allergies).
Since you already have the dog, make sure that you are keeping her clean and well-groomed, and that you clean the house regularly as well (these non-shedding breeds lose a startling amount of hair).
Also, make an appointment with your doctor or allergist. There are medications you can take (and there might be newer %26 better treatments), or it could be that you're responding to something completely unrelated. Different trees and plants pollinate at different times of the season; maybe it coincided with your bringing home the dog. It's worth checking out.
Remember, a dog is a commitment, not a piece of furniture. Don't buy one on a whim, don't get rid of one on a whim. However, if it gets to the point where you absolutely cannot live with her, contact bichon rescue (friends of mine recently adopted a bichon through rescue, and you could not find a more loving home).
I doubt it will come to that, but it pays to be aware of all your options. Good luck to you!
Well, my friend has gotton a bichon and she has major allegies. She was'nt allergic to him, but she had a little cold every day. I think you should check with your doctor about this becausedoctors know the truth. They will tell you if you should give her away or not. I hope I helped!

Pet adoption?

I wont to adopted a dogand i put in my application and they said they got it the i email them to see if the adopted the dog and they said that they would be working on it this week but i haven't heard any thing. should i email them back. It's so hard to just not know anything.Their is 5 puppys and their mommy died after given birth. I'm already in love with the dog also i told them that i would take anyone of them. I have already with out and bought somethings for the puppy, I know crazy. their 5 weeks old *** of 8-17-07. What should i do?
Answers:
if you are able to, i would call them and talk to them in person to see how your application is going.
Yes, I would go ahead and contact them again. There is a careful process they go through to make sure the parent is going to be a good one. Ours here is very thorough and the dogs are not allowed to be adopted out until they have been spayed/neutered and given a clean bill of health by a vet. However, I "fostered" our little dog until the vet could get her in. That gave us time, also, to know if she would mesh with our other dog. She did. We fostered her for three weeks until she was seen by the vet and had her surgery. He found that she had a terrible uterine infection that would have killed her if he had not seen her, and saved us a lot of personal money, because we had not been allowed to adopt her yet. We are all one big happy family. Ours is run by someone I have known for 30 years and is an ex sister=in=law but they keep the same line drawn for everyone. Excellence is in every thing they do, and all for the care and concern of the animals. See if you can foster the one you want until the requirements are met. Good luck. Our new dog is the little darling of the household!!
email the people back and tell them what you did and when can you pick up th puppies

Pet - Cat or Dog?

Which pet do you keep in ur home and which pet is not allowded ? why?
Answers:
If you have an active, outdoorsy life, a dog is a great companion. They NEED walked and socialized.
If you are more solitary, get a cat.
Both need love and attention and vet care. Both can and should live in the home. Outside pets don't live as long.
We have 2 dogs and a cat and they all live in our home. It is possible you know.
Cats are allowed, dogs aren't.Because dogs have a bad odor.
I have two cats and a dog that all live in my home. All three go outside as they please. I like them to be inside at night so i know they are safe.
both cats and dogs, my boyfriend won't let me have a spider or a snake... :(
I have a dog. he's a mix that i adopted from the shelter where i volunteer... i like cats, but they aren't allowed in the house and i don't keep them as pets because i am severely allergic to them, not because i'm worried they would not get along with my dog... =]
i have a dog he is an outside and indoor dog but mostly indoor. his name is benji and hes a bichon maltese. hes the cutest thing ever ! i luv him so much %26lt;3
i have 1 dog and 2 cat's there all inside pet's.

Persuading my mum and dad?

hi a week yesterday my hamster died im sad cuz i was at my nans and i couldnt say goodbye. The thing is i know this is gonna sound weird but im lonely now cus my mates at school liv to far away to see and my only m8 near wear i liv got into smoking not cannabis or anything tobbaco but he got really touchy when i said he shouldnt and he wouldnt talk to me id say sorry and it would be fine but one day he didnt knock now i havent seen him for about 6months but thats not wat matters.i want a rat not to replace my hamster but sort of in her memory cus since she died its like my best freinds gone and im not gonna forget her but i just want a pet to keep me company i know it sounds gay so if u dont want to answer and ure gonna take the mikey dont ive tried asking but i chiken out and i cant get across how i feel and cus its the summer hols i have nothing to take my mind off the subject pls answer wiv anything you can think of
Thanks
josh
Answers:
Josh,
I am so SORRY about your hamster! :( That is not gay that you miss her, that just shows people that you actually care about your pets, congrats for being a caring person. I understand how you feel, after my rat died on my b-day I wanted another pet because I missed her so much. But the thing was I wanted gerbils, and my stepmom got bit by one when she was little and was like "you can get another rat or a hamster but no gerbils!" Which made me upset because after my sisters rat died she let her get a hamster even though she said she hated them. So this is what I would do start saving up money until you have about 120 bucks. (I know that this seems like a lot, but for an adequate cage, the rats, and cage accessories it is a good amount) Then go to a store like petco (if they have one where you live) and look at cages and everything you want.
Here is a cage I would recommend.
http://www.petco.com/product/12286/super...
It is only 100 dollars (I know ONLY 100 seems like a joke but this is a GREAT DEAL!)
It comes with
-roomy chew-proof wire cage with easy to clean deep plastic base that helps keep your pet's bedding in the cage, not scattered onto your floor
-food dish
-loft and ramp that adds living space to your pet's home
-hammock that suspends from the cage wire and gives your pet a place to snuggle in for a long nap
-4.5 dry quarts of super absorbent Carefresh bedding
-L/M Animal Farms Vita Vittles Ferret Food in a resealable 2 lb. bag
-Roller Basket Ferret Toy
-Critter Canteen Water Bottle--easy to fill and drip-resistant
So all you have to get after the purchase of that cage is the rats, rat food, and a hideout for the rats. This is what I would recommend.
for the hideout, I don't remember if it is the biggest one, or the second biggest one but it will cost about 9 bucks
-http://www.petco.com/product/2276/kaytee...
for food because it has so many larger pieces of food
-now for the rats themselves I would advise to go to their adoption center in the front, last time I went to the one near me they had to 10 gallons w/ 5 baby males in one and 4 baby females in the other. For 2 it would only be like a 4 or 5 dollar donation which is much cheaper compared to 5-7 bucks each.
The total for the everything you need including the rats is (drum rollll) about 120 bucks.
Now you are probably thinking in my question I said 1 rat, not 2. Well the thing about rattertats is that they like to have a buddy. Even if you spend 6 hours a day with it, you can't make up for a sleeping buddy and grooming buddy. So get at least 2!! They both will bond to you if you spend enough time with each.
Now as to ask/convince you parents type on the computer how much everything would cost and don't mention rats until you save up enough money. Then finds some articles on the internet that say how smart and affectionate rats are. Copy and paste that to another page. Then type on another page why you want to get 2 rats. Make sure it looks professional and give it to them when they are in a good mood. Hopefully they will say yes! If they don't maybe mention that you feel really lonely because you told your friend to quit and its because of your better judgement that you are lonely and a person responsible enough to not hang out w/ a person who smokes is responsible enough to have 2 rats. What ever you do, don't throw a fit!
Good Luck!!!! :)
You could make a memory book for your hamster. Each page, you could draw something that made you happy about him. I'm sorry that your hamster died. Just think about happy things, he's in heaven now, I'm sure.
I would wait a little on the new pet, maybe get it for Christmas. Just tell mum and dad that you want a new pet for Christmas and that's all that you want.
Sants will surely have a good heart at Christmas.
i understand how you feel josh, you dont want to replace your old hamster however you want another pet to keep you company , talk to your parents tell them how you feel lonely and you want a friend im sure they will understand and if you took good care of your old hamster they are bound to let you get a rat good luck :)
p.s:sorry for your loss
okay now dont feel bad about how much your missing your hamster! anyone can get attached to anything, and it happened that you got close to your hamster, and understandably so, with your friends far away and all.i know its going to be hard to talk to your mom and dad about why you really would like this rat, but you need to! why dont you just say exactly what you have written to all petqna.com s members! i am sure they will understand.just say how bad you want it, and that you are lonely without having your little hamster, and that you will be able to take care of the rat all by yourself. i really hope you get that rat, and soon too! good luck and dont be nervous about talking to your family!
You sound like you have a good head on your shoulders. Are you an only child? First of all, you did the right thing by telling your mate that he shouldn't be smoking anything, whether it be cigarettes or drugs. If he doesn't want to be your friend anymore then let him go - it sounds like he is not someone hyou want to be around right now anyway. But I guess without him you don't have a pal so what to do? Well, sounds like you want a rat (yuck) and are not sure that your parents will think its a good idea. The only way you're going to know is if you ask them... perhaps have a backup ready so if they say no then say what about another hamster or some fish or something that they might say yes to. When my son was your age, he had an ant farm which is kind of fun.
Well, Josh I am so sorry that your hamster died! The best pet that would keep you company is a dog. A labrador retriever is a really great dog they are great with kids and love water and love to retrieve. You should not get a puppy because it is so hard to go through puppy hood, but if you go to www.lab-rescue.com, you can adopt a lab at whatever age you would like them to be. You just fill out an application with your parents and go to one of their adoption days and get a dog. Learn more about this on their website. Good luck! I got my second dog from them and she is so sweet! The best part about her is that she camed trained!

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals?

Is it necessary to be a total vegan to belong to PETA?
Answers:
I don't believe they require it. However, before joining an organization you should do research on them. PETA has a long history of contradicting the very things they supposedly stand for. If they had it their way, it would be illegal to have any kind of pet. They are also a bit radical at times. In once instance, they released dogs at a dog show so they could "be free". A very lovely dog was hit by a car and they said he was better off dead than being in captivity.
Stay away from peta.
No, it's not necessary. PETA does suggest cruelty free living but they won't deny you membership if you eat dairy products.
PETA solicits me for contributions about weekly, and I love the red meat!
It's not, but it seems a bit hypocritical. PETA is full of hypocrisy, though.
Honestly if you want to help animals, I'd suggest supporting your local humane society. They need your money and support far more than PETA does.
PETA has an agenda that is probably different than what you think it is. If you love animals, you should be concerned about their welfare, not their rights.

Parakeet Nesting Box?

I bought a nest box for my parakeets and i dont know if its any good. It looks like the one in the link. http://www.smarter.com/bird_bedding_prod...
The problem is my birds always go on top of it and try to carve it out. They never try to go inside of it. I was wondering if the box should have a perch on the outside or inside because my parakeets box has a perch in the inside and why they keep on trying to carve it out.
Answers:
I did not look at the box you have posted. From experience, though, a perch outside is a good thing. The female or the male will sit outside and feed the other adult inside from the perch and also sing to it inside the box. The bottom of the box should have a small cavity carved out of it and things for the babies to grab onto with their feet when they hatch (wire grating works, just make sure there are no sharp edges), otherwise they will get 'splay-legged' and will not be able to walk or sit on a perch.

Paddletail newt turning a lighter color?

I got my paddletail newt a few weeks ago. Just a few days ago I started to notice a few little greyish colored spots on his tail that weren't there before. (He started off all black.) There are also a couple on his side. I'm probably worrying too much, but is this normal?
Answers:
I notice that my newt changes color when I put in lighter colored rocks. it had to do with camoflog. Is your tank lighter(gets more light, lighter substrait ect) then the petshops?

Owning a pet like a dog in California?

I have a friend who wants to know if she can own a pet in California and leave the pet at home by it self while she is at work? What are the responsibilities of owning a pet in California? What are the do's and don'ts? Thanks
Answers:
Check with the local authority regarding local ordinances (laws) about how many dogs, control (leash laws), vaccinations, etc. Even the local humane societies will have that information for you. As long as you comply with these laws, she can own a dog. She can leave the dog at home, inside or outside (fenced in property, with adequate food/water/shelter) while she is at work. There are also "pet-sitting" and "pet walking" services, even "Doggie day-care" services, if she wants to do that while she's at work.
Just be sure she gets her dog from the local humane society shelter, and save a life!

Out of state ferrets in california?

i know the ferrets are illegal in california
but i also heard that if you have purchased a ferret out side the state of california you can legally own it in california
is this true?
if it is im gonna go buy me a ferret
Answers:
Quoted from the California Department of Fish and Game web site.
"In California, domestic ferrets are legal to import, transport, or possess only by permit. Permits are issued for specific purposes, such as for medical research or for transportation of confiscated ferrets or rescued stray ones out of state. Importation and possession of ferrets as pets are not permitted in California. Many of the states in the U.S. that allow ferrets as pets do so under permits or certain restrictions."
Keeping ferrets as pets is illegal in California regardless of how or where they were obtained.
yes
No, buying a ferret outside of the state and bringing it in is still illegal. It is illegal to possess a ferret in the state of California, it doesn't matter where you got it from.
Not legal, and not a good idea. Ferrets are not really pet like animals.
California confuses me with all of its (ridiculous) ferret laws. It just seems like more trouble then it is worth.
To find out for sure and avoid head-ache for both you and your new pet, please call your local animal shelter and ask them. They are up to speed on all the laws, stupid or not, and will be able to accurately answer all of your questions.

Our room has fleas allover. i tried putting on diff. kinds of insect repellent but they're still biting me.

and i have a newborn. with a lot of choices which one is safe %26 effective? has anyone heard of Electronic insect repellent?
Answers:
What is your situation? Are you renting the room or an apt? If apt., your landlord should have the property exterminated and should make sure the exterminators use product safe for infants. I have never heard of electronic repellent that is effective on anything.
You might have to leave your room for a day or two, but if you are renting a room in a house or something, the whole house will need to be treated and bushes, areas outside near the door or patio sprayed. Oftentimes a secondary treatment in a few weeks is needed. If the exterminator says only one treatment then in three weeks put a white paper towel on the floor and see if any fleas jump on it. If even one does, you still have a flea problem though you might not be feeling it yet.
A professional exterminator should be able to guarantee their services and re-treat at no cost if needed within a reasonable time.
If there are lots of cats around outside, you could have a flea problem just from walking from your car to your apt. Fleas often hitch rides on pants legs and into the apt. That is why an exterminator should spray the bushes, ground around your area.
But usually when there are a lot of fleas in an apt with no pets, it is because whomever lived there last had a pet that had fleas and the room was not exterminated or properly exterminated when the past occupants moved out.
you need to go to walmart and by the spray to kill the fleas
look in the pet section
You need to take you, the baby and the animals out and bug bomb the place. While you are out get the animals dipped and you change clothes and try to shower in case they are in ur hair. When you come back air out the house and be ready to CLEAN. But you wont have any more fleas!
What are you waiting for?? Do something. I'd go nuts there. Poor lil baby! ahhhhhh
flea bomb! get the animal that is bringingt in fleas out of the house. animal needs bath and frontline from vet

Our hamster died. How do I explain to a 3 yr old?

Worst day ever. Our landlord said we could have a dog, so we gave away Tito, a jack russell to a co-worker and my son was crushed. So he deceied to go play with Sally the hamster... but she was... uh so tired n sleepy. We were going to go replace her, but not sure if we should? Is that ok to lie to him? Also we just replaced her cage a few nights ago. Could change in her enviroment cause her death? Weve taken her out tons of times.
Answers:
It might of been a natural death. I think you do need to sit down and try your best to explain very simply about death. Tell him it wasn't his fault. Perhaps, you could have a funeral for the hamster (with a little box) you could say prayers or have some brief observation. Let your child say something or draw a picture to include with it, and bury it together. I've heard of parents doing this. It seems to work. Then go out and get a new hamster together, so he feels a little more empowered.
Good luck and take care.
I'd suggest telling him that his hamster had to go away, but that it's to a happy place where all the hamsters are free to run around and have fun. I'm not really sure...
3 years is an unusually long life 4 a hamster... and hamsters are generally vicious things, i iadvise a dwarf breed of rabbit.
well, just explain to your son that hamster went to a better place where all his friends and family is.
and get a new one.
Hi.
My hamster, Molly, just died two nights ago. It's hard to lose pets. It may be hard for your son to deal with it, but most people agree that telling him the truth would be your best bet. If your hamster was sick, it might be a comfort to know that she will never be uncomfortable again.
I wouldn't suggest getting another hamster. Their life span is about 100 days, and they get sick a lot before they die. My family has spent probably 500 dollars on our last two hamsters, just to keep them comfortable before they pass. If you're into them, turtles live a very long time. Dogs are good, too, but people get even more attached to them. But if you think you can handle it, maybe it's okay for you to get attached to something with a short lifespan.
Changing her cage could have done it, but don't blame yourself for that. We change our hamsters cages all the time, and they're fine. They need the change in environment- it's good to stimulate your animals with that sort of thing. There are tons of things that can kill our pets that don't occur to us to worry about (some types of dyes and some herbs which we eat frequently). Most likely, your hamster was just getting old. They can die very unexpectedly if they don't get sick before they die.
I'll try to find a website that mentions foods you shouldn't feed your pets, but it's not a huge concern most of the time.
Certainly don't blame yourself! Sorry about your hamster. She's playing in the sky with mine, now :)
i would go out and find a same one that looks like your hamster , My parents did that for me when I had a hamster , they still do .I hope this helps . good luck .-B-
say our hampster is in a vacation to a nice place
well...u could tell him that it "ran away"
You Should Set him on the couch and talk to him like a adult.
Tell him the hamster went to a better place and is happy the and he will see him when he dies in about 80-90 years.
Don't lie to your kid. If you lie to your kid then you are telling him that it is OK to lie. That is not Ok. It is bad for your child's overall behavior. Just be honest about it. He will deal with it the way he deals with it. And that is good for him. Tough love. He needs it so he won't become a baby. Not to be mean. Tell him the truth.
i would get rid of your hamster get another one like it in better condition, and no it is not ok to lie to your 3 year old sun.

Our guniea-pigs bite what can we do?

we have moved them outside and they have become really spooked. One of them bit a member of our family now the kids are scared to pick them up. they are also very skittish what can we do?
Answers:
You could give them some time and if they don't get used to being outside you might bring them back in. Other than that, there really isn't anything else. You can't train them to not bite like a dog.
When they bite you can flick them on the nose, they hate it and will soon learn.
Give the giuinea pigs something to chew or gnaw on, hopefully this will draw the attention away from biting other people, they could be bitin out of anger!
Don't bother them if its too hot.
Guinea-pigs always have a timid nature, the biting may be occurring because they are not quite used to their new surroundings and are seeing different things. It also depends on how old the guinea-pig is, baby guinea-pigs tend to nibble at your fingers because they like to put things in their mouth.
But in this case the reason for your guinea-pigs biting is narrowed down to either fear or dominance. If your guinea-pigs bite when you corner them in the cage to pick them up or shake when you hold them they are a fear biter. The most common reason for a Guinea Pig biting seems to be a teenage Guinea Pig that is testing his limits and wants to get down and play with the other Pigs, or generally do his own thing. If this sounds like your pet, then it is a Dominance issue that you are dealing with, basically you need to earn the guinea-pigs trust but do it slowly.

Our dog just died!?

this isnt really a question, just a warning! we had a yorkie for 8 years. then one day he starts falling over when he walks. we took him to the vet that day, but he died a few hours later. it turns out that he ate some meat with antifreeze on it %26 thats what killed him. we found out that 2 days earlier he wandered off %26 got a hold of some raw chicken with antifreeze. it turns out that people often lay out raw meat with antifreeze on it in order to get rid of stray cats. apparently antifreeze smells %26 tastes sweet to animals, so they are drawn to it. basically he went from being perfectly healthy to dead in just 2 days! so for people with pets %26 who dont have a fenced in yard, unless your dog is tied up or in a "kennel", be sure to keep an eye on them when theyre outside. also if yahoo has a service for posting things like this, please let me know
Answers:
I'm so sorry to hear that. Have you called your local police? It's illegal to poison domestic animals. It carries a fine and possible jail time.
I don't know of a Yahoo! site to post things like this, but you might try Craigslist.org. Antifreeze is a pretty well known accidental danger to pets, but the fact that people are leaving it out intentionally is sickening.
I'm sorry for the loss of your pet, I know first hand how that hurts. :-((
That's horrible and I am very sorry. Someone poisoned our cat just like that years ago. Its an awful crime and those people need to be punished if found!
I am so sorry for your loss! I recently lost a cat and a dog and it is so hard to live with. Pets really do make good best friends!
Antifreeze has long been a quick killer of animals. In recent years, manufacturers have come out with an antifreeze that doesn't have the same properties - it doesn't smell or taste sweet. I did a lot of investigating when I discovered my radiator had a leak. I didn't want it to injure neighborhood strays, so I asked around for alternatives.
Some people are sick bastards - trying to kill animals like that. Everyone should watch their pets all the time- their yard or not. We recently lost a Pomeranian when someone threw silica gel packets into his pen. He died hours later - after bleeding profusely from all angles. We thought he was safe in our yard. Some people are just sickos.
I'm really sorry about your loss, and I know how it feels. I would try to find out who left the exposed antifreeze out in the open where it was accessible. At least then no other dogs that live near you will go out and do the same thing.
-winces- My deepest condolences on your loss. That's a horrible way to lose your pet!
Our neighbors had a doberman that was very aggressive towards anyone outside the family, but they always kept it fenced up. Well, someone in the neighborhood must've been really paranoid it'd get out because they threw some food with antifreeze over the fence. Dog died shortly after.

Our cat lies in wait around our bird feeders, He slays them. My wife is upset. What should we do?

We have had the cat for a while, its an outside cat, but lately, we (my wife esp.) have been getting into attracting birds, they really make time on the front porch, alot more enjoyable...Ideally, we would like a reliable way to modify the behavior, we dont want to get rid of the cat
Answers:
Hmm that is some damn good redneck entertainment right there!! Hmm... put the bird feeder on a metal pole in the yard, high enough and far enough away from anything that will let the cat enjoy its natural instinct.
put the feeder somewhere else that the cat cannot get to, or stop feeding the birds?
if you notice your cat haning around the bird feeder, squirt with a diluted amount of vinegar in water or full on with hose. do this every time you notice, your cat will soon learn that thier behaviour is wrong. I have had cats AND birds in the same house for 18 years, and not once have I had a problem. My birds fly free around the house with the cats inside.
Also put a bell on your cats collar to scare away the birds when the cat comes near. (this should be a given if you have an outside cat, especially with other wildlife)
Get rid of the bird feeders and bird baths. Our cat did that too. My dad reluctantly took down the bird bath.
get one of those breakaway cat collars that has a bell on it, everytime the cat moves, the bell will ring giving the birds a warning sighn and enough time to get away
Hmmm. You could do what I do-only put food out during the heat of the day when your cat is usually napping. Other suggestions: Buy a hanging bird feeder and put it up where the cat can't get it. Only fill the feeder once a day and try to do it at a time when the cat is away doing other things. Put the cat in the garage until the birds eat all their food. When the cat waits by the bird feeder turn the hose on him--it won't hurt him but it will discourage him from hanging around the feeder.
Bells on collars don't always work. If possible, put the bird feeder where your cat can't reach it. Squirting your cat with water every time he so much as looks at the feeder may help. Soon he will ignore them altogether. Make sure he doesn't see them as coming from you (like, hide it behind your back or something). Also, you could crate him or tie him up.
there are "cages" that fit around the plastic tube feeders which allow small birds like sparrows, chickadees, finches, juncos, ect. to fly in and eat while keeping pesky large birds, cat, squirrels, other predators away. this might help a little
You will either have to take the bird feeders down or keep your cat inside. As long as you put food out the birds will keep coming and the cat will keep killing them. You are just sentencing these birds to death. Cats are responsible for the death of millions of songbirds each year which has become a huge environmental problem...many organizations such as the Audobon Society and the Humane Society are starting campaigns for people to keep their cats indoors.
Keep your cat inside!
House cats (domestic pets) are NOT a part of nature. They are alowed to roam free by irresponsible owners who refuse to believe that they ARE irresponsible, or that their pets could possibly be a factor in the diminishing number of birds.
Free-roaming domestic cats are one of the top predators of songbirds. See these websites for statistics:
http://www.owra.org/cateffect.htm...
http://wildlife.wisc.edu/extension/catfl...
http://www.abcbirds.org/cats/states/flor...
http://redcreekwildlifecenter.com/blog/?...
If you own a cat, it is your responsibility to provide for that cat's health, safety and welfare. Outdoor cats can fall victim to other animals, cars, poision, cruel humans, bad weather, illness and parasites. Outdoor cats have a fraction of the lifetime enjoyed by their indoor counterparts.
So, whether a cat owner does it for the love of the pet, or the love of wildlife, they should keep the cats indoors, where they belong. Only wild species should be kept in the wild. Domestic pets are not part of nature, and they belong indoors.
Modify the behavior of your cat?
Your cat will continue killing birds as long as you keep letting it.
There is only one solution. Your cat is YOUR responsibility. You are responsible for every action, every damage, every killing that you allow by letting your cat roam.
Your roaming cat leaves toxic feces in your neighbors gardens, may you pray that none of them are pregnant women.
You say that you don't want to get rid of the cat, but you apparently don't care about it either. You don't care when you put at risk everyday, to the danger of cars, other animals, other people (your neighbors), disease and parasites.
Almost every day, I see questions here on Yahoo! from people who seek to eliminate their neighbors cats. These cats are using their gardens as litter boxes, and killing the birds that they feed. Many people recommend poisoning, shooting or using leg-traps.
In one area near me, cat owners were recently warned to keep their cats inside. They did not respect their neighbors, and continued to let their cats roam. Most of the cats were found - beheaded.
People are p*ssed. They shouldn't have deal with YOUR cat - EVER. Those of us who understand and respect nature, know that domesticated cats are not a part of nature. There is nothing natural about your cat killing birds.
I am a cat owner. My cats are allowed to go outside on occasion, while supervised. I love them, and respect my neighbors and the environment enough, to know that they are my responsibility.
You are responsible for your cat. If you cannot control it's behavior while outside, the only solution is to bring it indoors.
Even if you remove the feeders and birdbaths, you are not removing the danger - your cat. He will simply do it at your neighbors house. If I happen to be your neighbor - be aware - your cat will be brought to animal control. I'm tired of picking of your cat poop in my yard.
If you want a pet, be a responsible pet owner. Keep it indoors, or don't keep it at all.

Other ways to potty train your puppy other than crate training?

Answers:
Diligence. I have never had a crate trained dog. We train ours by repeatedly taking them out. You have to do it every 30 minutes or so but it works fast. Mine are always trained within a week or two. I have noticed crate trained dogs take ALOT longer. I think it is because when ppl don't want to deal with a possible mess they put them in the crate.
tie a rope to the door handle with a little bell on it. every time you take your puppy outside to potty, besure to get your puppy's attention and to jingle the bell. hopefully your puppy will figure out that ringing the bell means he can go outside.
If you live in a house with a lawn, take him outside after he eats. When he does his business, praise him. See if he pees in different spots on the lawn. This is good, because if he urinates in one patch it is bound to become stained from the urine's acid. If he does happen to take a fancy to a certain spot, take him out to the bushes or somewhere unkept. Apparently my uncle trained his dog to paw at bells attatched to the door when he wanted out. I have not tried this, but I am sure there are articles on it.
I trained my dog by taking him outside every hour or so and after he went to the bathroom i gave him a treat eventually i increased the time i would wait to let him out my dog now scratches at the door or window if he needs 2 use the bathroom and can hold if 4 at longest (kinda cruel) 12 hours.

Open season is declared on alligators following the death of a Labrador dog. Retribution or nuisance removal ?

Following the death of a prized Labrador dog, the Temple Terrace City Council, in Florida, passed a resolution giving trappers 90 days to kill all alligators longer than 9 feet found in the stretch of the river that runs through town. Should the dog's owners be held responsible for the unleashed dog killed by an alligator near the river bed, or should all the threatening alligators be eliminated as a preemptive measure ?

Answers:
We have a law like that around here. I personally agree with it fully because if a alligator is capable of killing a large dog, then it is also capable of killing a small child. While it may seem unreasonable to open season on all large gators for the death of one dog, this law somewhat helps to prevent the death of small children and even other dogs. The larger the alligator - the more powerful ... I believe this law is highly reasonable. While it allows open season on alligators over 9 ft for 90 days, it prohibits the killing of alligators under 9 ft and those over 9 ft for the rest of the year.
Very sad that the wildlife always loses, but if it were your dog who got killed, you would be up in arms against gators too.
It is a fact of life that people move in and wildlife has to go - I don't like it either, but I wouldn't like hungry gators in my neighborhood either - would you?
I think it should have been on leash. The gators were simply acting on instinct. That is a sick law, I wouldnt do that if my prized dog had died like that. The poor gators... the ones over 9 feet are the most beautiful...
I don't believe in killing alligators. That is their natural predatory instinct to kill animals to eat. The dog should have been on a leash and the gators should not have to pay for it. The river is the gators home and territory and they should be respected.
I would say it's the owner's fault--rather than drive out all the alligators, why not just educate people about keeping their dogs safe?
it is just doing what comes naturally to it.. some how they get in these areas and cant get out, people keep them as pets and then let them go. they should catch and release it (there are people who do it) why kill such an amazing animal? yes you could say that is was the owners fault, and if the dog was on a leash it wouldn't have happened. but you never know. it could have just delayed it any how, i wouldn't kill the animal i would get one of the few people out there who will relocate it (they are out there) and i know one it there in Florida.
I think if the dog was running loose, for any reason, and the alligator didn't just leave the river well, the alligator was just doing what alligators do. It's not like the alligator took a half mile hike to find a dog to eat. It's a shame wildlife always has to pay..
I feel bad for the Lab, =-( Poor water pup,.
A 9 foot gator is a good sized critter, and if it can take down an agile, full grown Lab, it can certianly snatch a child. Since people can't seem to control their animals or their children, the gators pay with their lives. Also, if the one has gotten bold enough to grab a big dog, it needs to go. And how does one tell which 9 foot gator grabbed the dog?
As for punishing the owners, I am sure if the Lab is as prized as they say it is, they are pro'lly grieving for their dog. Perhaps they are not local, and don't realize that every large puddle in Fla has the potential to have big reptiles living in them.
Gators used to be on the brink of extinction, but now we have a blue jillion of them. I have no problem with the harvesting of 9 foot gators. I also have no problem with NOT harvesting them. I just wish the poor dog didn't have to be the sacrifice that got the action. I am glad it wasn't a child.
p.s., Dogs ON leashes have been snatched as well,...
Later,
C
First of all, keep your dog on a leash when you're around alligators. DUH! And NO, we shouldn't killing all the gators just because they found a nice well fed meal practically served to them on a platter. I live just south of TT and beLIEVE me - I do NOT let my dogs near fresh water with out being on a leash (even then, I give the water a WIDE berth). Sheesh, some people. Maybe the gator should have taken the PERSON out of the gene pool.
Alligators are not in danger of extinction, so even if the open season was declared on all of them, there wouldn't be a problem there. As long as the alligators are going to be consumed or made into purses, it's cool with me.
They gonna be killin of me and my Bobby's food source! It's not the gators's fault that they got all them teeth and no toothbrush !

have you asked for fish? I know its not the same as a dog or cat but if they see that you are responsible for the fish they may think about getting you a dog--it could be that they don't want the animals in the house
Try to work out a deal with your parents. This could take some time, but it may pay off. You first need to show them that you are responsible enough to handle a living creature. Maybe start with an easy pet, like a small fish that cost's a dollar at the pet store. Save up money, to buy all of the pets eqiptment by yourself. Then continue to show your parents how well you treat your pet. Then just write them a letter or note, on how you feel about taking care of your own pet. When the time comes, talk to them about it and make a list of rules; I will keep my pet clean, if my pet makes a mess, I will clean it up, I will walk my pet once a day, I will always remember to feed my pet, etc... and if you fail any of these rules recieve some sort of punishment, like a cut in your allowance, etc.
Good Luck!
figure out a way that shows them that you are responible. i had to get my parents to say yes about getting a horse. its hard at first but after they see how responsible you are then you should sit down and talk to them about how you understand how much work it will be and explain to them why a pet is so important to you. hope this helps.
Go on powerpoint and make a slide show on the animal that you want. Or a pet contract saying that you will give the pet what it needs and lots of love. Then sign it, date it and keep it hung in your room to remind you of the commitment you made. They will realize that you are responsible and can take care of your own pet. Show them you will take care of it and love it for it's whole life. A pet is for life, not just for a week or two. They don't normally care how much you want it, it's how well you will take care of it and how you will benefit from having a pet. For instance, On this goldfish website it says that kids who own pets get higher test scores than kids who don't have pets. Also, petting a cat can lower blood pressure. Normally when you own pets, you are generally healthier and happier. Pets bring joy and happiness to their owners and there's no changing that.
Maybe you should consider small pets that can be kept in your room. Like maybe a hamster or gerbil. They are small and cute! But ask your parents. Just dont go for any big animals.
Tell your parents why you should have a pet, prove to them that you can handle the responsibility. Plan where the pet will live, do it's buisness, etc. That way your parents know you are serious about having a pet.
P.S.
It almost always works if you bitter up your parents. Also, try telling them that you make them happy, and if your not happy, then they aren't happy. Nobody's happy, but get a pet and everybody will be. It works a lot at my house.
gl on getting that pet!!
act irresponsible then tell them to buy you a pet to teach you responsibility.
Start with probably a fish, and take care of it well. After that, they'll see how well you take care of the fish, and try to work out a deal with them.

One of my bunnys tooth is longer than the other and would a Guinea be a good cage mate for an aggressive bunny

My rabbit just gave birth to 2 litters in the last 3 months. After the first one I noticed one of her front teeth had gotten croocked and now it is longer than the other. She does not like to chew on cage toys. Is their anything else I can do to keep her tooth from getting to long? My other rabbit is so aggressive that she can not be kept near any other rabbit. I have heard that ginea pigs get along well with Rabbits. Would a ginea pig get along with my rabbit or is that just asking for trouble.
Answers:
That's just asking for trouble. They should not be housed together otherwise you'll find one of them mutilated one morning (not a good thing to wake up to). You may see rabbits and guinea pigs housed together in pet stores, they get away with it because the animals are still babies and are sexually immature. Once they mature, the fighting starts and they need to be separated. So please do not put your bunny and GP together.
As far as your rabbits teeth go, you will need to consult a vet and have them show you how to grind the one tooth down. Otherwise you'll end up with feeding problems and a really unhappy bunny.
you gotta get it to chew something or just file it's teeth yourself. and guinea pigs can be mean too, they'll hold their ground.
I had a bunny who lived with a guinea pig just fine. They lived a happy life together. They would play and eat together--it was kinda neat.
You should observe/watch them for a while and work up to longer visits together. Play it by ear--it can be done.
Like any animals you introducing--it takes time and it they might not make a good pair, expecially once the rabbit shows some agression. Time will tell and you will know.
Good luck.
P.S> Might consider getting them fixed if your not a breeder. It's hard on your bunny to have so many babies so close
1. take the rabbit to the vet and gets its teeth straigned out together.
2.it depends how your rabbit is.introduce them slowly.first cage bars.if they get along well introduce them with no bars but watch them.rabbits dont really need company but lots of attention
A rabbit teeth are always growing. Take a finger nail clipper and cut it to line up with the good tooth.
Breed and shown rabbit in the past. And had the problem.
Do NOT house a guinea pig with a rabbit. Diseases can be passed from to another, their diets are different and not to mention that a rabbit, however gentle, can accidently kick a guinea pig causing internal bleeding. Guinea pigs can also be mean. Get your rabbit spayed please. There are so many unwanted rabbits out there and it's not good for her health. Getting both rabbits altered might make their behaviors a little less aggressive. But I seriously do not recommend housing a guinea pig with a rabbit.
PLEASE DO NOT HOUSE THEM TOGETHER BECAUSE THE RABBIT WILL KICK THE GUINEA PIG, AND THEY HAVE DIFFERENT DIETARY NEEDS, MAKING IT HARD TO KEEP THEM HEALTHY! THE CAVY WILL GET HURT!!!!! Hope i helped. :D
A vet will take care of your tooth problem, but as for the agressiveness . . . Getting her fixed may help with that, but it is never 100% garanteed. I have a couple of female rabbits that get over aggressive when they are pregnant, if you are sure that it is female, you might want to give her a nesting box and a handful of hay just to see if she makes a nest.
Putting an guinea pig in the pen will most likely cause problems for both the bunny and the guinea pig (one eating the other's food for an extended period of time causes bad diaharea, and that is NOT good for either critter to have), they even need seperate kinds of food, not to mention any stray kicks or bites might break bones or damage something important.

Omg!!! pplz help me??

i really want a kitten but my parents dont let me what should i do ps i have baby bro and i think its his fault i cant get a kitten u kno cuz its his fault what should i do and if i get a kitten what should i get/ adopt what breed should i get that is good with children like a 3 year old baby. and what age should i get and should i get a male or a female plzzzz help me i always wanted a kitten when i was 5 years old plzz help me and if you know any web sites where i can find about a cats name plz tell me
Answers:
Well hon, here's what you need to consider. Cats do a pretty good job of taking care of themselves. But, there are responsibilities that go along with owning a pet. First, they have to be fed twice a day and they must always have fresh water. Second, cats use a litter box and you have to pick up their poop and pee every day.
Also, when you get your kitten it will have to go to the vet for shots and you should have it spayed or neutered. Your parents might insist that you get your kitten de-clawed so it doesn't tear up the furniture. All of this is pretty expensive so you need to save your money.
I prefer male cats and female dogs. Male cats are just more laid back.
I really don't know which breed you should get that would be good with a 3 year old. Our cat is a show-shoe and he's good with everyone.
I think that if you save your money to take care of the vet and you can explain to your parents how you will care for the cat that they might go for it.
i say clean and do extra things around the house
Well i always wanted a bird but my parents wouldnt let me then i researched them and told them all about them and they said ok and ive had him since sunday so i guess that may work good luck.
just by reading your question i can tell you are not old enough to be responsible for a pet. your parents don't want to get a cat because they will be the ones taking care of it, along with you and your baby bro. wait until your older %26 able to be responsible for the cat yourself and then they might let you.
First, your grammar and spelling is atrocious. Based on that alone, are you sure you're old enough to have a cat?
If your parents wont let you get a cat, then drop the subject. Youre not going to get anywhere with them. If you were mature and responsible, it might have been a bit more plausible of an argument.
Do some chores around the house,And make sure you keep doing them, once you get the kitty dont give up cuz they can still get rid of the kitty. The humane societys have a lot and there already fixed/declawed so i would say go there and make sure its a female,Only cuz i have had many problems with males.Good luck
Exactly. It does sound like you are too young to have the *huge* responsibility of taking care of and being in charge of the life of a living creature. Just wait a few years. Trust your parents - they know what's best for you. ... And what's best for the kitten.
Well, the decision is really up to your parents. Owning a kitten is an immense responsible. Vet vists, food, etc. can add up.
I suppose you can offer to do the majority of the care yourself (feeding the cat, cleaning the litterbox, etc.). You really need *actually do the work* if you agree to that though. You may be in for more a task than you think.
As far as what breed and male/female, I love 'em all! :) Other's may have a preference though.
If you get a kitten, please adopt one from a shelter though. There are so many that need a good home! (And don't ignore the possibility of getting an older cat)
Judging by your spelling and grammar and blaming your brother, You are too childish to have a pet, And I'm willing to bet that you are hounding your parents to no end. You need to learn to spell properly stop acting like a brat and grow up!
jeez "eve" and "bpski". i can see uve nvr ben chating befor to no tht its just easier to type this way? and as for the kittens? u take up sum responsible job, like babysitting ur bro or babysitting another pet. keep up ur grades at skool to. eventually after asking bout once every few days for the kitten, theyll cave cuz uve grown more responsible and cuz u now deserve one.
When I was young and my parents wouldn't let me have a pet because there were too many humans in the house, I found a stray cat and adopted him anyway. He had to live outside, but I fed him all the time when no one was looking, and he eventually became part of the family.
